Transurban’s 95 Express Lanes converted from HOV to HOT lanes in 2014, extending the managed lanes network in Northern Virginia connecting with the 495 Express Lanes. The 95 Express Lanes are barrier-separated, 2 to 3 reversible lanes that enable peak direction capacity.
Transurban added enhancements such as new access points and extending the roadway to provide travel choices to more customers in Northern Virginia. In 2023, the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension opened to traffic—providing 10 more miles of travel choices through Stafford County, Virginia toward Fredericksburg.
Together, the 95/395 Express Lanes comprise the longest reversible road in the United States, which end-to-end provides commuters a time savings of about an hour a day round-trip versus a trip in the general-purpose lanes.
