Opened in November 2012, Transurban’s 495 Express Lanes operate along a 14-mile corridor of I-495—Washington, D.C.’s Capital Beltway. The first in the United States to use real-time, fully dynamic pricing—adjusted every 10 minutes to maintain traffic flow—the roadway provides a faster, more reliable trip in one of the country’s most congested metropolitan areas.
The 495 Express Lanes consist of two lanes in each direction, bollard-separated from the Beltway’s general-purpose lanes. With connections to major arterial roadways throughout Northern Virginia, the travel choice saves customers on average more than 20 minutes off their end-to-end trip.
Transurban continues to improve the 495 Express Lanes, with the 495 Northern Extension adding about 2.5 miles toward the American Legion Bridge. Once open, the project will relieve congestion through one of the worst bottlenecks in the D.C. area.
